This quotation stuck out to me because not only is this imbalance of power prevalent in the context of the Haitian "apocalypse," it is also, unfortunately, plaguing the United States. It shocked me to read this quotation, and notice the similarities between the struggles of the Haitian community, and the economic crises affecting many Americans today. This quotation hit close to home because of it could easily be describing low income areas in America. Although many enjoy financial successes, society must always take into account the vast amount of middle and low class people who struggle everyday to get by. It is vital to read about, sympathize with, and understand these numerous situations, whether these disasters impact our nation or third world countries that need aid.
I too was struck heavily in reading about that as well. I thought it especially interesting the statistic on the incomprehensible growth of the richest in America, while the low-mid class grew comparatively less. One additional thought I might add is that when you consider that even America's poorest are far wealthier than the middle class in many underdeveloped countries, it adds an entirely new dimension to the hyper-rich who make the rest of us look like peasants.
ReplyDeleteI found it very interesting to see how we treated the third world countries. To me it seems that we only notice these countries when they are in need of help and at their lowest. It raises many questions about what we value and when we as a country feel the need to act
