Blackhole Comics

I chose to talk about the part during which Rob disappears and Chris goes to meet her best friend Marci for solace and comfort. This occurred in page 285 when Marci was showing Chris a picture of Marci and her friend going to a concert. Chris thought that the picture looked stupid and blatantly expressed her views, this caused Marci to become angry and lash out at Chris. Marci told Chris that she doesn't appreciate how her friend is criticizing her so much and says that she doesn't criticize Chris for her "fucked up life." She even goes on to say how she has a life and has to wake up early in the morning to go to school whereas Chris will just sleep the whole day. I found this passage very interesting because it shows how the friendship between two very close childhood friends takes a turn for the worse and it also foreshadows the end of this friendship. It shows you how time and distance can undo and weaken friendships. This has also been very true for me and I'm willing to bet for a lot of others as well.

Black Hole

The part that I chose depicts the aftermath of a very awkward and bad experience that happened the night before with the female protagonist. I thought it was interesting how the author was able to demonstrate the character's thoughts and sadness through the art as well as the writing. Both of these two aspects of the graphic novel/comic book were able to reflect and communicate the message that the author was trying to portray. I think this scene is also representative of what many high schoolers and college students experience - not to this degree but sometimes when you have a bad day or a strange experience it is very difficult to convey to other people what that is like, but I think the comic does a good job at that.

I was not able to post a picture in my blog post, so I will just describe the part that I chose to analyze. It is the part where Rob, Pearson, and Keith are smoking in the woods, and Pearson tells them about how Chris went swimming in the lake. Pearson tells Rob and Keith that she stripped down to her underwear there was a big split in her skin going down her back. She has the bug. At this point in the graphic novel there is some serious tension being created. As a reader I could really feel the suspense building up. Rob knows that it is his fault that Chris has the bug, and I am very interested to see what happens next. I am excited to find out how Rob reacts to the new he has just heard. I enjoyed this graphic novel because it is very different from anything we have read in class. I like how informal it is, and it is very easy to relate to because the it is all about the lives of teenagers. I also just wanted to point out the similarities between this graphic novel and Y: The Last Man. The idea of the plague is very similar because in both novels it attacks specific groups of people. In Y: The Last Man the disease only affects men, and in Black hole it only targets teenagers.
