Bounty
In reading this text, one of the main takeaways I found was of how we as humans often take things for granted. In a society that has been divided into the oppressed (flawed) and the oppressors (normal), it is very interesting to see how those not in power act when they need something. In particular, I was caught up in the passage on page 43 where Cole talks about the old times and he would do anything to go back there. Cole specifically writes, "What a beautifulcountry this must have been once, when you could hop in a coupe and buy a bag of burgersand drive drive drive, stopping to swim in a river or sleep in a grove of trees without worrying about intaking mutagens or having the militia arrest you and send you to the Everglades for eternity" (43). This quote really hit me as it basically is in reference to the world that we are currently living in. Too often we get caught up in the small issues like having too much homework or not being able to hang out with friends, but in reality we have our lives so easy. We can do everything that Cole dreams about and we can do it whenever we want to. While the story is about a fictional apocalyptic society and was a very interesting read, it also brings out life lessons that we can learn about for our own personal lives.

I agree, this novel definitely made me reflect on how we tend to take things for granted. Cole simply wishes that he could do simple things like swim in a river or walk down the street without worrying about being arrested. These are things that we take for granted every single day, when there are people in the world who don't have these luxuries.
ReplyDeleteI also definitely agree with this. We take life for granted too much instead of enjoying the simple things.
ReplyDeleteI agree wholeheartedly with you. The quote that you mention also stood out to me, and it almost made me feel guilty for ever wishing that things were more like the past when things aren't that bad now. We are so lucky to be able to live in America in the 21st century. What's sad is that there are many people living in impoverished and war-torn countries who might have the same feelings as Cole.
ReplyDeleteIt is terrifying to think if something like Cole's world were to happen to us. I also agree that we take life for granted a lot, but it's really hard not when we are busy with our daily routine. It's always when something it taken away from us when we finally realize the value of it.
ReplyDeleteThat exact same quote stood out to me when I read this. I often think about this issue as well. It's so easy to get caught up in complaining about school, stress, homework, etc. But in reality, we have it so easy. Although we are not in a divided dystopian society, relative to the rest of the world, we are incredibly privileged.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you too. We take so many things for granted and forget how lucky we are. It doesn't mean we shouldn't rally for change and improvement but that we should still appreciate and consider all the things we have. You're so right; there are so many people out there who dream of what we have already.

ReplyDeleteIt is so important not to take things for granted, as this is one of the first steps in developing empathy. Being able to put yourself in someone else's shoes allows you to feel the pain that others feel on a consistent basis, and compare that with the easy lifestyles we live today. It is crucial to have pity on those whose chances grow thinner, for there this is the only way to stop the injustices that occur in the world today.
